I finished reading the third book in Philip Pullman‘s His Dark Materials trilogy. In short, all three books were excellent. I don’t read much fantasy or young adult fiction these days, but I think these books are now at the top of my list for the genres. Harry Potter is exciting, fun, and very good, but I must say, Pullman’s work is consistently better.
I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’ll not describe each book in detail, but here’s a bit of what you’ll find: The story takes place in modern times, but a slightly different world than ours (actually, many slightly different worlds). There are witches, armored bears, angels, quests, friends and enemies, magical artifacts, and of course battles.
I’d like to thank the BookMooch forum for turning me on to Pullman, and BookMooch itself for making the books available so cheaply.
