I think you're mixing up the Lisa and the Newton. The Lisa was the first real GUI based computer for the general public. It wasn't so much a success as it was quickly replaced by the Macintosh. The Newton was their tablet/PDA from the 90's. I'm not sure why it failed while Palm succeeded.

There have been a lot of attempts at a full size tablet based computers over the last 10 years and none of them have really taken off. I think you're right that the timing might be just as important as anything else. We (at least Apple) has the tech to cram enough horsepower into a nice form factor and still get a reasonable battery life. There are enough web applications to make even a simple portable web browser worth it (if it's indexpensive enough), but Apple has all of the iPhone app developers to draw on to provide enough software to make it a good deal too. The iPhone OS is also better designed for use with your fingers, so I think that will help make the iPad successful (compared to the tablets that used operating systems that were really designed for use with a mouse).

Remember this is not the first apple tablet there was Lisa in the 80s so this might not be all design related success but "the time" related success. Besides the technolgy and capabilities the world is a different place and the way we interact daily through devices gives the ipad not only a coolness factor fighting chance but a functional factor and a step into the direction of technolgy that I think was very well relaized in the movie minority report.
I had more thoughts but now I'm tired and remember wait for the second or third Gen beta testing sucks when it costs money :)
